Three-Fifths Compromise- This compromise counted each slave as three fifths of a person when a state's population was calculated.
1. Find the word alliance on page 114. Use context clues to find out it's meaning. What clues helped you?
Alliance means joining together and being allies or friends. Clues such as "...to replace the alliance of independent states."

2. (A.) What issues divided the delegates before the convention?
Issues about how many representatives should each state have in the national government and how much power should the national government be given divided the delegates before the convention.
(B.) Why do you think the delegates agreed about the separation of powers?
I think the delegates agreed about the separation of powers because they didn't want the new government they were creating to abuse their powers.
3. (A.) Why did many delegates fear the power of the national government?
Many delegates feared the power of a national government because they believed that a national government would be too strong and take away important powers of the state legislatures. They also feared a strong national government would abuse it's powers, treating the states in almost the same way England had treated the colonies.
(B.) How did the delegates limit the power of the national government?
The delegates limited the power of the national government by dividing power between the states and the national government and the seperation of powers.
4. (A.) What was the New Jersey Plan?
The New Jersey Plan was a plan made by William Paterson of New Jersey and was supported by the smaller states. It proposed a one-house legislature in which each state would have an equal number of votes.
(B.) How did Virginia and New Jersey Plans differ?
The Virginia Plan proposed a bi-cameral legislature, the House and the Senate, and the number of seats in both parts of the legislature would be based on each state's population which would favor the larger states much like Virginia. The New Jersey Plan offered a one-house legislature that would give each state an equal number of votes that would give the smaller states the upper hand in voting.
5. (A.) Who was eligible to vote at the time of the convention?
White, males with a certain amount of property could vote at the time of the convention.
(B.) How did the Electoral College show what the Framers thought about the idea of people electing the President?
The Electoral College showed that the Framers believed that the citizens that could vote wouldn't be sufficiently informed so they decided that the voters could elect smarter more informed citizens called senators.

They did not trust the people to make educated decisions about their government.
